Project Rustic Refined Reveal - Part 2

If Part One of Project Rustic Refined was about setting the tone, Part Two is where this European cottage inspired home really comes to life.

These are the secondary spaces — the rooms that support everyday rhythms, creativity, and connection. They may not always be the first rooms you show guests, but they are some of the most important. When designed well, these spaces make a home feel thoughtful, functional, and deeply personal.

As with the rest of this project, every room was designed to feel intentional and layered — never overlooked. From hardworking utility spaces to creative rooms meant to spark imagination, these rooms of the home reflects how the family truly lives.

Designer: Kelsey Leigh Design Co.

Study

The study is one of the most personal rooms in the home, and it’s filled almost entirely with the clients’ own collections and heirlooms — which we absolutely love. This space tells their story in a way that no brand-new décor ever could.

Leather-bound books, vintage clocks, old spectacles, family photographs, and meaningful objects are layered thoughtfully throughout the shelves. One of the most special moments is a collection of hand-carved wooden boxes made by the client’s grandfather, including one inscribed with, “Because I love you, Granddad.” Those are the kinds of details you can’t design from a catalog.

We also incorporated gallery walls using family heritage photos and layered in lighting that highlights these collected pieces. The result is a room that feels soulful, saturated with meaning, and completely unique to the homeowners.

And yes… there’s a secret door in here! Insider tip: secret doors are consistently one of the most requested features we see in custom home design.

Laundry Room

The laundry room proves that even the most utilitarian spaces deserve great design. Khaki-painted cabinetry sets a warm, grounded tone, paired with terracotta hexagon tile that adds texture and continuity from nearby spaces.

This room was designed with real life in mind. There’s a built-in dog wash station, a custom dog crate with an adorable plaid bed, and even a built-in pot filler under the cabinet to easily fill the dog’s water bowl while keeping food tucked away and tidy.

Thoughtful details like a pull-out ironing board hidden in a drawer, striped café curtains, and a wicker pendant light make the space feel charming rather than purely functional. It’s hardworking, warm, and genuinely enjoyable to use.

Mudroom

The mudroom continues that balance of beauty and practicality. Locker-style built-ins with diamond-shaped cutouts provide individual storage, while pull-out drawers below and upper basket storage keep everything organized and easy to access.

A v-groove paneled key-drop area with peg hooks adds texture and function, and the terracotta hex tile from the laundry room flows right into this space for a cohesive look. The room leads to the back door, finished with a Dutch door—perfect for letting in extra sunlight or keeping pets comfortably contained.

Rec Room

The recreation room is all about comfort, connection, and a little bit of fun. Grey-green painted v-groove paneling wraps the room and creates a cozy, grounded backdrop.

A built-in wet bar with a brass rail displays glassware, barware, liquor bottles, and collected treasures — making the rec room feel layered and lived-in. A custom window seat looks out toward the pool, offering the perfect spot to pause and relax.

An arched passageway leads to a golf simulator room, while another secret door provides additional hidden storage (again — because secret doors). A chocolate brown velvet sectional paired with a leather ottoman faces the TV wall, creating a comfortable setup for movie nights and friendly gatherings.

Art Room

This tiny space in the home may actually be one of my favorites. Blue-painted cabinetry, doors, and trim set the tone, layered with plaid wallpaper that brings our trademark KLD aesthetic into the space.

One of the sweetest moments is the floral upholstered accent chair paired with an alabaster dome table lamp. Built-in slots for paper keep supplies organized and accessible in this custom cabinetry.

With views of the front yard and tree-lined drive, this room is the perfect creative station for kids to draw, paint, and imagine or for adults to tuck away for a bit of work.

Craft Room

The craft room might just be one of the crown jewels of the entire home. Designed with a feminine, layered feel, this space blends beauty with serious functionality. We took the clients’ hobbies to heart as we tackled this space’s design.

Brown-painted cabinetry anchors the room, while a v-groove paneled accent wall above the sink adds texture. A floral block print sink skirt and coordinating chandelier shade bring in softness and charm. At the center of the room, a kitchen island doubles as a craft workstation, surrounded by linen counter stools for gathering and creating.

Storage was thoughtfully designed with a built-in wrapping paper station, brass rail with hanging baskets for art supplies, and a reclaimed wood cabinet with glass doors that proudly displays the homeowner’s art collection. A cozy accent chair, lamp, and scalloped stool tucked into the corner create a quiet spot to pause or plan the next project. This room is equal parts beautiful and inspiring.

Stay tuned because in our final Part Three, we’ll be sharing the bedrooms and bathrooms, where the home becomes even more personal. And if you missed the Project Rustic Refined Reveal Part One, be sure to go back and check out the main living areas of the home. More to come soon — we can’t wait to share the next chapter of Project Rustic Refined.
